Elphinstone Stampede: Death toll rises to 23

On Friday morning, the horrific stampede that occurred at around 10:30 am, during morning rush hour amidst a heavy downpour on a foot-over bridge in Mumbai's Elphinstone station has claimed 23 lives as of now with 32 still admitted at the hospital and two have taken discharged against doctor's medical advice


The Friday’s Elphinstone-Parel Bridge stampede claimed another life after Satyendra Kanojia, who was critically injured and admitted in intensive care unit of KEM Hospital , succumbed to his injuries on Saturday morning.

The death toll is now 23. According to the hospital officials, Kanojia, who was one of the 61 casualties brought to the hospital on Friday, had severe brain injuries and was on ventilator.

“Satyendra was on ventilator and critical expired today.  He had Axonal injury (brain injury).  Relatives present at the time of his death.  His body has been sent for post mortem,” said Dr Avinash Supe, dean of KEM Hospital.

While speaking to My Medical Mantra, the doctors looking after the Friday stampede injured informed, they are stable but most of them are in a state of shock.

He further said the others, injured in the Friday stampeded and admitted are stable and recuperating well. “Few of them will be discharged by evening,” said Dr Supe.
