After the ugly spat between Eman Ahmed’s sister Shaimaa Selim and doctors treating her, the escalation of war of words has caught External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj’s attention.

Swaraj took the stock of situation on Thursday morning (April 27).

Speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Muffazal Lakdawala said, “Minister Sushma Swaraj spoke to me today (April 27) morning and she has been given detailed update about Eman’s current situation. I have submitted all the necessary documents related to Eman’s bariatric surgery and investigations which were carried out on her.”

Following the verbal spat, which went viral on social media and shook the Indian medical fraternity, Maharashtra’s Health Minister Dr Deepak Sawant visited Saifee Hospital on Thursday morning. He was accompanied by Dr Jadhav, a known Neuro Physician.

Dr Deepak Sawant told My Medical Mantra, “I have seen all the reports personally in details and there is not a single word substance or truth in the allegations levelled by Eman’s sister Shaimaa Selim on Indian doctors. I condemn the allegation made by her sister on Saifee Hospital doctors.”

Dr Sawant not only voiced his support for the Saifee doctors who are treating Eman, but he went on to praise Dr Lakdawal and his team. Dr Sawant revealed to My Medical Mantra that when he visited Eman at the hospital, he asked her how she was doing. To which, Eman gestured that she was doing fine.

“Dr Lakdawala and his team have done a commendable job. Eman now fits in the CT scan machine which means she has lost weight considerably. Her neurological ailment is not new as it’s been there since number of years,” the minister said.

Meanwhile, Dr Lakdawala, Bariatric Surgeon who performed the surgery on Eman, had visited the Mantralaya (Maharashtra government’s headquarters) with all the necessary documentation which doctors have prepared since Eman was admitted to Saifee Hospital for treatment.

In October, Eman’s sister had got in touch with Dr Lakdawala explaining to him her sister’s plight. A renowned obesity surgeon in Mumbai, Dr Lakdawala accepted the request and reached out to India’s EAM Sushma Swaraj to help Eman get a visa. With her timely intervention, Eman acquired a special visa to visit Mumbai for treatment.

Speaking to My Medical Mantra on this humanitarian gesture, Dr Sawant added, “EAM Swaraj and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis took timely action and everything was arranged for her, from special visa to special room in the hospital. Doctors are doing their best and now her sister is complaining of them not taking proper care. How can this be true?”

Meanwhile, on insistence of Shaimaa, doctors form Abu Dhabi had visited Saifee Hospital on Wednesday (April 26). There are talks that Eman could be shifted from Mumbai to Abu Dhabi.

Despite all the allegations, the doctors’ fraternity in India has extended its unwavering support to Dr Lakdawala and his team treating Eman. Doctors have unanimously opined that though Shaimaa has raised questions on Indian doctors, the truth is that doctors from Saifee Hospital have done their best and are still doing their duty towards Eman as their patient.
