Heat

Seems like monsoon has withdrawn from the country and October heat is here torment us. Mercury levels have taken an upward path since the past two days and it might get even hotter in the days to come.

Few things to take care of while stepping out in the heat

Extreme heat events can trigger a variety of heat stress condition such as heat stroke. It generally occurs when the body becomes unable to control it’’s temperature, the sweating mechanism fails and body cannot cool down. One can avoid the bad effects of heat by following simple tips such as:

  • Wearing lightweight and loose clothing.
  • Using sunscreen.
  • Limiting your outdoor activity to morning and evening hours.
  • Taking a cool shower or bath.
  • Wearing shades or glares when outside and once back home use cucumber to get back the moisture of the eyes.
  • Use wide brimmed hat for sunny outdoors, if possible.
  • Watch what you eat and drink.

The key is to stay hydrated which means you’ll need to consume more fluids than you usually do. If you’re sweating profusely, you must also increase your intake of electrolytes. One can look for following tips to sustain the hot environment:

  • Drink more water than usual; don’t wait until you are thirsty.
  • Avoid alcohol and sugary drinks.
  • Choose foods with high antioxidants like berries.
  • Have fruits, vegetables and fresh juices.
  • Consume pepper mint and mint.
  • Coconut water helps beating the heat as well.
