DMK chief M Karunanidhi passes away at 94

Muthuvel Karunanidhi, a champion of Dravidian politics and a five-time Tamil Nadu chief minister, has died. He was 94


Chennai’s Kauvery Hospital said has confirmed that Dr M Karunanidhi, the leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party, died at 6:10 pm.

“With deep anguish, we announce the demise of our beloved Kalaignar Dr M Karunanidhi on August 07, 2018 at 6:10 pm.

“Despite our best possible efforts by our team of doctors and nurses to resuscitate him, he failed to respond. We profoundly mourn the loss of one of the tallest leaders of India and we share the grief of family members and fellow Tamilians worldwide,” the hospital said.

He was in a critical and unstable condition since the past few days.

Condolences pour in for the leader of the Dravidian movement.

West Bengal Chief Minister who was heading to Tamil Nadu after receiving news of his worsened condition tweeted:

“Today is a black day in my life, one which I can never forget as I lost my Kalaignar. I pray for his soul,” Rajinikanth on the demise of Karunanidhi

Hundreds of supporters gathered outside the hospital as the news of the DMK patriarch becoming critical spread in the evening, with all of them praying for his recovery. The state DGP had ordered tightening of security across Tamil Nadu.
