Extreme water temperatures – too hot, and too cold- can break capillaries in the skin. According to Kimberly Yap Tan, holistic aesthetician and founder of skinSALVATION, washing your face with water temperature that is too hot can cause skin dryness and stripping.
Too cold water will not clean off the dirt or makeup productively. Washing with water at a freezing temperature won’t be beneficial for your skin either.
Not removing your jewellery while washing your face can injure your skin. Additionally, skincare products such as your moisturizer can get wasted when it gets stuck in your jewellery.
Tan added that tying back your hair can be a good practice, too, aside from removing your jewellery. Hair strands falling on your face can add oil back to your skin while doing your routine.
Wrong face towel
You may be using a soiled washcloth to pat your face dry after washing it clean. If not, you may be using a towel that’s too rough in texture that can over-exfoliate and irritate your skin especially if you are sensitive.
However, finding the softest face towel does not really matter as long as it is not too coarse for your skin type, according to Alexandra Engler, Beauty and Lifestyle Senior Editor at mindbodygreen. Engler added that you can stock a few washcloths and just use one side each time you wash.
Wrong post-wash habit
Tan said that you may be pausing in-between steps for too long, leaving your skin to dry out. It is essential to work on your care routine quickly to seal in the hydration; otherwise, the water will evaporate leaving your skin cells dehydrated.
So after you wash your face, immediately apply face oil, moisturizer or serum while your skin has still a bit of moisture. This way, water will be pulled in or trapped in your skin effectively for adequate hydration.
Wrong brushing time
According to Tan, you should brush your teeth before doing your skincare routine and not after. Brushing your teeth after or in-between steps can wash off the products you have just applied.
Also, brushing your teeth after washing and before applying moisturizer might just cause skin dryness.
Wrong washing methods
Face washes are used in different ways. Specific instructions are provided with each type.
For example, non-foaming products should be applied to slightly damp or dry skin, while foaming washes need water to form into a lather. Treatment washes need to be left on the skin for a little longer to treat pores more effectively.
