Stress-at-work

It can come from a sudden meeting, your boss shouting at you, phones ringing all the time, or even just an annoying co-worker that has one too many cups of coffee and now wouldn’t let you work in peace. Heck, it can even come from the copy machine that always acts up.

Whatever the reason, it’s an all-too common occurrence, and it can actually be dangerous if left unchecked and can even lead to anxiety. You don’t want to be burnt out, and you certainly don’t want it affecting your mental health.

So what do you do? Here are 4 ways you can do to cope with it and eventually manage it much better.

Have a relaxation strategy: Relaxation helps us balance better the fight-or-flight response and its physiological effects. To do this, take a deep breath, close your eyes, and slowly tense and relax all of your muscle groups, taking care to not think of anything while you’re doing so. Just think “relax” and follow through.

Mindfulness: You may not know, but stress tends to get bigger when you keep on ruminating about the past or worrying about the future. Mindfulness can help you break these habits as it will help you keep your attention in the present, and along with it the acceptance that now, not later or before, is where you need to be in. You can achieve this through meditation.

Problem-solving: As an active coping mechanism, problem-solving helps you approach problems that otherwise seem overwhelming into tiny steps you can follow while also keeping your mind engaged. Steps include defining the problem, looking for solutions, making a plan and executing it.

Reappraising negative thoughts: Constant stress and worry often leads to people developing a mental filter where every situation is always seen in a bad light. Terribly unhealthy, you can counter these by trying to treat the situation as what it actually is and looking at it from a different perspective and considering other possibilities. Constantly doing so will help reduce any negative emotions you have, leading to a much healthier and active mind-set.
