Have you ever heard about blood donation in animals? No right? As a human being, we generally don’t pay attention to this subject. Shockingly, as much as 90 % of us would not know that animals, too, can donate blood.
We are not aware of this issue due to lack of awareness among the masses about animal blood donation. It makes the task of the doctors more difficult, to find a suitable blood and blood donor for the injured animal. Like us, animals too need blood during surgery or when they meet with an accident.
While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr JC Khanna, Secretary of Bai Sakerbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital, said, “In one week, two-three animals, admitted in the hospital, require blood, and the cases are rising day by day. Earlier, we had a blood bank in the hospital but, it was shut down a few years ago. Considering the need of the blood for the injured animals, we have shortlisted a few stray dogs, from whom we take blood as and when it is necessary.”
Dr Khanna further added, “As of now, we have around 15 to 20 dogs as blood donors who are selected according to their blood groups. If an animal needs blood, we take 250 ml of blood from the donor. We need to spread awareness about animal blood donation so that the dog owners would come forward and donate blood.”
Dr Khanna also emphasized, that there is not much awareness of animal blood donation, and there should be a massive awareness campaign to spread a word about animal blood donation.
While speaking to My Medical Mantra Sankalp Sharma, founder of an NGO, ‘O My Dog’ said, “There is not much awareness about blood donations in animals. There are no blood banks in the city to store blood as well. People are aware of blood donation, but they are aware of blood donation in animals. We need to spread awareness of animal blood donation.”
Namrata Gandhi, an animal activist, shared, “Social media plays an important role in the blood donation of animals. All you need to do is to share your post on relevant groups with a contact number, and people do come forward to help in every way they can.”
She further added, “It is normal for a dog to donate the blood, I have a 6-year-old Labrador, and she has donated blood thrice till now. A healthy dog can donate up to 300ml blood or more, depending upon their weight. So, I urge people to come forward and help animals in need.”
Although the awareness about the animal blood donations is less among the people, some pet lovers take up this issue on various social media platforms. It is observed that these pet lovers, to help the animals, try to spread the word and go out of the way to help them.
