While explaining about the bariatric procedure that was performed on Jogewat, Lakdawala said, lap band surgery involves placing a silicone band around the upper part of the stomach to create an hourglass shaped stomach. “A small outlet is left to allow food to enter into the lower part of the stomach. The band proves to be effective in aiding weight loss, as it restricts food intake; moreover, food stays in the stomach for a longer period thus leading to early satiety and decreased consumption,” said Lakdawala. He said following the surgery, Jogewat can lose about 40 – 50 per cent of his excess weight within 18 months

After being admitted to Saifee Hospital on Monday, he underwent a battery of medical tests to find the cause leading to his obesity. Doctors at the hospital found that the lifestyle he led was a major contributor to his obesity and decided upon the surgery.

Jogewat joined the police force in 1979. He was an athlete and an avid volleyball and football player in his younger days, the 57 year old started gaining weight after a gall bladder operation in 1993. It is said he had an insulin imbalance in his body and he began gaining weight since then.
