Childbirth is a celebratory occasion for every family. There was a time when parents-to-be would choose hospitals to deliver their babies based on the reputation of doctors. Now is the age when they look for facilities to enhance the unique experience of childbirth.

Parents-to-be in Pune are increasingly opting for boutique birthing centers, with premium facilities to welcome their bundles of joy. High-end maternity care centres are being set up in the city, which cater to those whose lifestyles can support their services.

“We want to make childbirth a pleasurable experience. Our labour room are decorated with candles and we use aromatherapy that makes labour more relaxing. We have designed a special program, where lectures are held once in every fortnight that give insights to would-be parents into what care should be taken and what exercise should be done during pregnancy. We even arrange baby showers at the hospital, and the response to each of our initiative has been overwhelming,” said Viju Rajan, General Manager, Columbia Asia Hospital, Pune.

Apart from baby showers, these centres have several unique ideas to make every step of pregnancy memorable. From arranging a dinner date on the day pregnancy is confirmed to offering photoshoots and decorating the vehicle to take to baby home, these maternity hospitals are going beyond clinical experience. And in the age of social media and personalised experience, these creative ideas are finding several takers.

Supretam Singh, who recently delivered a baby girl in one these hospital, said, “My first child was born in the US. I wanted similar experience during my second pregnancy. The younger generation looks for comfort and the best facilities available to enjoy the experience of pregnancy and childbirth.”

Recently, birthing centers such as Cloud Nine, Columbia Asia and Oyster and Pearl have mushroomed in the city, which offer specialised care to pregnant couples. These centers also offer lactation consultation, parenting classes and Lamaze classes. They also hold events where mothers-to-be can bond and share their experiences. Apart from facilities in labour rooms, they also decorate private rooms to suit the taste of clients.

Dr Amita Phadnis, Medical Director of Oyster and Pearl, said, “We want to make this journey as much fun as possible. Also, today, the young India is visiting different western countries and is expecting the same kind of high end services to be provided by the hospitals here in India. Our idea is to give them the best facilities available.”
