A doctor from Gadchiroli, Maharashtra, which is a Naxal-affected district has been awarded Uttam Jeevan Rakshak Padak approved by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind.
The Union Home Ministry announced this on Friday, January 25. The President of India has approved the conferment of Jeevan Raksha Padak Series of Awards – 2018 on 48 persons which includes Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak to 08, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak to 15 and Jeevan Raksha Padak to 25 persons. 08 awards are posthumous.
Dr Saluja has been awarded this medal for saving a life of two policemen from Maharashtra, who had been badly injured in the Naxalite attack. He had risked his life to reach to the police party, who had been seriously injured in the Naxalite attack.
On May 3, 2017, a police party of C-60 Jawans, of Maharashtra Police was attacked by heavily armed Naxalite in Bhamaragad tehsil, in Gadchiroli.
Twenty-two policemen were injured in the attack and a few were seriously wounded as well.
Dr Saluja didn’t think twice before leaving from his clinic to save the life of the Jawans. He had entered the dense forest, which was around 65 KMs from his place.
Dr Saluja and his team drove past several hurdles and managed to reach to the wounded jawans in the nick of a time. Owing to which all the seriously wounded jawans were rescued and saved by the police.
The Maharashtra Police had also awarded Dr Saluja for his bravery.
API Deepak Bhandawalkar, now posted in Pune, was wounded and very critical after the Naxal attack could recovery only because of Dr Saluja’s efforts. It was doctor Saluja who saved his life. While speaking to My Medical Mantra, API Deepak Bhandawalkar said, “I am very happy that Dr Saluja has been conferred with Uttam Jeevan Rakshak Medal. When the Naxal attack took place. I was seriously wounded and was critical as well. Dr Saluja helped us risking his own life. On the very day, he was like a god to us who had come to help us.”
Jeevan Raksha Padak series of awards are given to a person for meritorious act of human nature in saving the life of a person. The award is given in three categories, namely, Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak and Jeevan Raksha Padak. Persons of all walks of life are eligible for these awards. The award can also be conferred posthumously.
The decoration of the award (medal, certificate signed by the Union Home Minister and lump sum monetary allowance) is presented to the awardee in due course by the respective Union Ministries/Organisations/State Government to which the awardee belongs.
