During the Bombay Ophthalmologists’ Association’s Focus 2017 conference a special session regarding oculoplasty was held at Hyatt Regency Hotel in Mumbai.
Oculoplasty is a branch in ophthalmology which deals with plastic surgery and reconstruction of eyes and related parts of the eye along with the face in cases where the problem is by birth or acquired.
Dr Kasturi Bhattacharjee, Chairman of the oculoplasty session, said, “Every functional surgery has aesthetic aspects. When person grows old the part above the eyelid droops down. But an ophthalmologist should not just focus on reconstructing the part that has developed laxity. But besides giving them good aesthetic look they should also ensure that they get good vision at the same time.”
Oculoplasty deals with cases like overhanging skin around the eye, tumours, dark circles around eyes, acquired swelling of the eyes, congenital defects in the eye like part of the eye which is turned inside, abnormal eyelid, tear drainage etc.
Experts attending the session said that these types of conferences help them in understanding newer techniques, complicated cases and international trends.
Dr Debraj Shome, who was moderator of the session, said, “For some surgeries in ophthalmology where there is aesthetic reconstruction required, ophthalmologist take help of plastic surgeons. With modern technology, newer techniques are providing good non-surgical options to improve aesthetic part of the face.”
