BMC Hospitals: Fire safety measures should be full proof, demand MLAs

BMC hospitals, dispensaries and medical colleges, have no NOC with regards to fire safety. Even KEM Hospital doesn’t have the NOC. So, in case of fire in the hospital, a big emergency can arise. Fire safety issue in BMC hospitals was raised in the Maharashtra assembly

After Kamala Mills fire, Municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta, had ordered fire department to carry out fire safety audits in all the BMC hospitals and dispensaries. In which, it was revealed that KEM Hospital doesn’t have the NOC.

On Tuesday, in Maharashtra assembly, BJP MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar and Ashish Shelar raised this issue. Speaking to My Medical Mantra, Atul Bhatkhalkar said, “Many hospitals in Mumbai haven’t taken NOC regarding fire safety. No even KEM Hospital. This is a serious negligence. Taking a fire safety NOC is mandatory. Those hospitals which don’t have NOC they should be given necessary facilities by the BMC. In Mumbai, only 2 hospitals have fire safety NOC.”

BJP MLA Ashish Shelar said, “BMC hospitals, dispensaries and medical colleges should have adequate fire safety measures. CM has informed atht an order has been given to BMC administration regarding this.’

In BMC hospitals like KEM, Sion and Cooper, lakhs of patients take treatment. Owing to which, the fire safety is of utmost important. In case of care in the hospitals, a big emergency can arise. So, the Maharashtra government has directed the hospitals regarding the fire safety norms.

Speaking to My Medical Mantra, Prabhat Rahangdale, chief fire officer, Mumbai Fire Brigade said, “BMC Hospitals in Mumbai have fire safety measures in place. Every month, the officer goes and conducts an audit. Care is taken to avoid any troublesome situation.”
