Saturday June 18, was a just another day for Bengaluru police, as the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee was in the city. Security drill was conducted, standard SOP’s were followed and roads en-route to Raj Bhavan was blocked for the president’s movement.
But, what was termed as a routine that day changed a life of M L Nijaligappa a Sub-inspector from Karnataka police, as his quick thinking won millions of hearts.
Nijaligappa had to make a split second decision; he chose humanity over his duty. In order to save a life, Nijaligappa who is attached with Bengaluru traffic department dared to attempt something which his colleagues or seniors wouldn’t have dared to.
Nijaligappa stopped convey of India’s first citizen, President Pranab Mukherjee, in order to let an ambulance pass through.
M L Nijaligappa, was on duty at Bengaluru’s Trinity circle, when he spotted an ambulance which was trying to make its way through, and just seconds before President’s convey was about to pass he deftly made way for the ambulance to pass with the patient.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Traffic, East Division, Bengaluru city, Abhishek Goyal, later posted a message on social networking site twitter saying “Sh Nijlingappa, PSI-8 Ulsoor Tr PS, allowed the Ambulance before Hon’ble President of India’s convoy at Trinity Jn. Kudos to him.”
Even, Bengaluru Police commissioner Praveen Sood, praised Nijaligappa’s presence of mind he tweeted, “The policeman who took such initiative to be rewarded. Well done!”
Meanwhile the Karnataka state police have also decided to reward M L Nijaligappa, who had stopped the President’s convoy.
