Speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Nirmala Vaze’s advocate, Smita Singalkar, said, “We have made two demands in the petition. One is to ensure proper implementation of the rules in the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, and second is to hire a psychiatrist for the post of medical officer. The psychiatrist has to play an important role as they understand the patients properly. It is easy for a psychiatrist to explain how and what is the plan of treatment for the patient? Moreover, they can plan on different types of mental illnesses properly. Therefore, for the medical superintendent’s post, a psychiatrist is the best possible person.”

Singalkar further added, “Maharashtra’s four major Mental hospitals are in, Thane, Pune, Nagpur, and Ratnagiri. Of them, only one hospital has appointed a psychiatrist as the head. Being a psychiatrist, they have the right to certify or discharge a patient, so if the psychiatrist is the head, then this process will move more swiftly.”

Dr Hina Merchant, Assistant Professor, Sion Hospital, said, “It is a good step if a psychiatrist becomes the chief of the hospital, as he has all the information about it. The psychiatrist has all the information about how the system works, how patients are, or what is the patient’s condition. Moreover, with the psychiatrist’s experience, it will be beneficial for both the patients and the hospital.”
