Actors learn a lot, about life and otherwise, while playing different characters in their movies. Similar was the case with Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan, who experienced the struggle of visually-impaired people while playing the role of a blind man in his recently released movie, Kaabil.

While essaying his role, the light-eyed actor was moved by the pain that visually-impaired people undergo and he pledged to donate eyes with Aditya Jyot Eye Bank, Mumbai.

Inspired by the actor’s move, Aditya Jyot Hospital has kick-started a nationwide campaign to spread more awareness on eye donation.

“Hrithik pledged to donate his eyes with our eye bank on his birthday this year. While playing the character of a visually-impaired man in his recent movie Kaabil, Hrithik felt the pain of being visually-impaired. He also met many visually-impaired people, and he decided to pledge his eyes,” said Dr S Natarajan, Director of Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital.

The hospital also aims to get 1 million people pledge their eyes during the campaign.

“Though Hrithik pledged his eyes on his birthday, he did not want us to publicise it as he didn’t want this to be tagged as a promotional activity for the movie. Now that Kaabil is released, we would like to inspire people to follow his example and pledge their eyes through this campaign,” said Natrajan.

An official from the city’s biggest eye bank, The Eye Bank Coordination and Research Centre, said increase in number of eye donations has reduced the waiting period significantly.

“When celebrities endorse a cause, people follow them. Donating eyes is a noble cause. We need more people to come forward and donate eyes, as the waiting period for corneal transplant is still between six months to a year,” said Dr Arjun Ahuja, Head of the Ophthalmology Department, KEM Hospital.

Currently, most donors are senior citizens. “Eye donors could be of any age group or sex. But, if the donor is in 10-50 age group, then chances of better quality cornea is high,” added Ahuja.

Other Bollywood celebrities who have pledged their eyes include Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Rajnikanth. Recently, actors Randeep Hooda and Kajal Aggarwal too recently pledged to donate their eyes after they were inspired by playing visually-impaired role in their upcoming movie, ‘Do Lafzon Ki Kahani‘.
