Soon after Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sleuths raided Dr Savita Chavan’s Ruby Diagnostic Centre and Maternity Home in Bhandup, the doctor has been absconding and is reportedly untraceable.

FDA has registered a case against Dr Savita Chavan, an Ayurveda practitioner, for illegally carrying out abortions and practicing gynaecology-obstetrics. As an Ayurveda degree holder, Dr Chavan was not in the capacity to carry out procedures like abortion and gynecology.

Sources say the raids, which was carried out on Dr Chavan’s Ruby Diagnostic Center and Maternity Home premises on Wednesday around 7.30pm, went on till about 2.30am on Thursday.

In the raid, FDA seized drugs worth Rs70,680 and officers say 11 unused medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) kits and 15 used MTP kits have been seized from Ruby Maternity home.

Speaking to My Medical Mantra, FDA commissioner Harshdeep Kamble said, “Dr Chavan had an Ayurveda degree, but she continued practicing gynaecology and carried out abortion procedures as well.”

FDA has been informed that Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had issued a show-cause notice to Dr Chavan 10 days ago for violating the Bombay Nursing Home Act.

“Dr Chavan was handling MTP kits illegally and that is why we have asked the BMC’s health department to investigate whether she has violated Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act,” Kamble said.

Jayesh Lele, former IMA President, said, “IMA does not recognise activities like this. There are number of doctors who are practicing like this in India, but no action has been taken against them. These doctors are not allopathy doctors with MD degree to carry out abortions and gynaecology procedures.”

Speaking to My Medical Mantra on the condition of anonymity, the officers privy to the raid said MTP kits that were stored illegally in her drawer were the ones used for abortion post six-week gestation period.
