Virat Kohli always makes it a point to speak out when a social issue is involved. This time, he can be seen throwing some light on the atrocities against children in the name of education.

Virat took to Instagram and shared a video of a woman yelling on a kid as she was trying to teach her maths. Virat has condemned such pattern of teaching. “The fact that the pain and anger of the child is ignored and one’s ego to make the child learn is so massive that the compassion has totally gone off the window. This is shocking and saddening to another dimension. A child can never learn if intimidated. This is hurtful,” read Virat’s Instagram post.

Joining Virat, power player Shikhar Dhawan has also shared the video on Instagram and criticised it. He has termed it as one of the most disturbing videos he has ever come across.

According to the experts, the reactions of the cricketers are valid because the video exhibits how a child should not be treated. “The child is visibly scared in the video. If such intimidation continues then it can have a long term negative impact on a child’s psychology as he or she will grow up. Such children will have low self-esteem and could be prone to depression. The child may also develop a negative image of a person in authority,” said Dr Sagar Mundada, consultant psychiatrist based in Mumbai.

Meanwhile, this video has become viral and it is condemned by many people. Ex-secretary of the Bombay Psychiatry society and assistant professor at KEM Hospital Dr Heena Merchant pointed out the thin line between strict parenting and intimidation. “Sometimes, Parents have to be strict with the children. But the behaviour of the woman in this video is unacceptable. Virat has pointed out the right thing.”

Further, Dr Merchant also highlighted the growing tendency of putting controversial photos and videos on social media in order to get the attention. “I am not able to understand why someone would shoot a video while intimidating the child. It could one of the attention seeking attempts,” said Merchant.
