A woman from Kolhapur gave birth to a baby weighing 5 kg. Yes … you will be shocked if you hear this but it’s true. On 20th September, at the Janani Hospital in Kolhapur, Sampada Joshi (name changed) gave birth to the baby.
The hospital claims that it is the first baby in Maharashtra who weighs 5 kgs and the height is 2 feet and the hospital also said that it is a record in the state. Dr Saroj Shinde from Janani Hospital carried out the delivery.
Speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Saroj Shinde from Janani Hospital said, “It is a unique case. Generally, a baby weighs around 2 to 5 kg during the birth but this baby weighs 5 kgs and the baby is 2 feet tall. Till now, it is the heaviest baby born in Maharashtra.”
Generally, a delivery of the heavy baby isn’t normal. Before this, a baby weighing 5 kgs was born in Gujarat.
Dr Shinde further said, “If a woman is diabetic during pregnancy, then the baby can gain weight. But, in this case, the woman had no disease. And in these type of deliveries there are complications too. But, Joshi underwent a normal delivery.”
Dr Manohar Motwani, a gynaecologist from Mumbai said, “A baby weighing 5 kgs during birth is unique. When the doctor comes to know that the baby is on a heavier side, it is better to opt for a cesarean delivery. As, during normal delivery, there are chances of breaking of amniotic sac (a fluid-filled bag which protects the foetus), which can be dangerous for the woman.”
