Depression can be treated via surgery and a 50-year-old American is a witness to this medical miracle. Jackie (name changed) fought depression and anxiety for 34 years before she decided to go under the knife.
She was successfully operated at Jaslok hospital in Mumbai and now free of the mental disorder.
“She had depression problem as a child. It aggravated after she was sexually abused by her swim coach,” said Dr Paresh Doshi, based stereotactic and functional neurosurgeon at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre.
Doshi said when her condition got worst and she lost her job, she decided to get operated.
“Jackie tried bunch of medications along with shock therapy, Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)- a noninvasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression, psychotherapy etc without any positive results,” explained Doshi.
Jackie underwent deep brain stimulation surgery (DBS) at Jaslok hospital two months back. “DBS has been an accepted treatment for several neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, stroke, among others, for the last 15 years. But it is only recently being used to treat psycho-neurological problems such as obsessive compulsive disorder and depression,” said Doshi.
